The UK Repowering Opportunity: A £6-10 Billion Market by 2035

Over half of the UK’s onshore wind fleet will reach end-of-life decisions by 2035, representing 7–8 GW of capacity at risk. These aging farms, built in the early-to-mid 2000s with smaller, less efficient turbines, are now prime candidates for repowering – a process that can deliver a 1.5x to 2.0x capacity uplift on existing, proven sites.

At REI Wind, we provide the essential services to make UK repowering projects a success: second-life turbines, professional dismantling, logistics, and refurbishment – all backed by warranties and performance guarantees.

Second-Life Turbines for Repowering

We supply refurbished Vestas and Enercon turbines, including models released by repowering projects in the UK and Europe. Our stock includes proven models like the Vestas V52, V47, and V80, as well as Enercon E48, E70, and E82. All are restored to original specifications and backed by warranties.

Professional Dismantling

Safe, efficient, and controlled dismantling is the first step in any repowering project. We handle the complete removal of old turbines – tower, nacelle, hub, and blades – with a focus on preserving component integrity for reuse or resale.

Transport & Logistics

We coordinate the transport of turbine components across the UK and Europe. Our logistics solutions cover complex, oversized loads, ensuring safe delivery to refurbishment workshops or new project sites.

UK Generator Refurbishment

With thanks to our partners RFM ‘the’ specialist in the refurbishment of ENERCON direct-drive generators, restoring performance, reliability, and efficiency for E40 through E82 platforms and are based in the UK.

Our comprehensive generator services include inspection and diagnostics, mechanical and electrical overhaul, rewinding and component replacement, and full testing and recommissioning.

For UK repowering projects, we currently have multiple generators under refurbishment: E70 2MW and 2.3MW units, E82 2MW, E48 800kW, and E44 600kW generators—all available with a 3-year standard warranty and an optional 5-year extended warranty . We also offer exchange component discounts for qualifying projects .

Direct-drive generators are particularly sensitive to stator coil degradation, often caused by moisture ingress or heat-related resin breakdown . Our engineers perform precise Insulation Resistance (IR) testing to locate faulty coils, enabling targeted repairs such as coil bypass, single-core repair, or full replacement . With experience on par with manufacturer-level specialists, our team ensures efficient troubleshooting and minimal downtime .

All refurbished generators are restored to optimal capacity and original manufacturer specifications, backed by our 95% availability guarantee through full O&M packages . Full documentation of previous refurbishments is available on request .

Repowering Support

We support repowering projects – from the controlled dismantling of old turbines to full value recovery.

Our services include:

  • Asset evaluation and technical assessment – We assess your existing turbines to determine their condition, residual value, and optimal path for repowering.

  • Controlled dismantling and removal – Safe, efficient, and compliant decommissioning of old turbines, preserving component integrity for reuse or resale.

  • Component reuse and resale – We recover maximum value from your existing assets through refurbishment and resale of serviceable components.

  • Second-life deployment strategies – We help you identify opportunities for turbine relocation, repowering, or repurposing within the secondary market.

For UK repowering projects, we combine this expertise with local knowledge of UK planning, grid connection, and CfD framework requirements. Our end-to-end approach ensures you maximise the value of your existing assets while transitioning to higher-yielding new technology.

Our Partnership with RFM Services

With a nationwide network of technicians and its own control center in South Wales, RFM offers comprehensive monitoring, rapid response times, and operational support – giving our customers peace of mind from day one.

FAQ

What is wind repowering?

Replacing older wind turbines with newer, more efficient models on the same site to increase energy output.

Over half of the UK’s onshore wind fleet (approx. 7–8 GW) will reach end-of-life decisions by 2035. Repowering allows asset owners to maintain grid connections while significantly increasing capacity.

From Allocation Round 7 (AR7) onwards, repowered onshore wind projects are eligible for 20-year, CPI-indexed CfDs, providing price certainty and stable revenues.

Our team follows strict safety protocols, coordinating heavy-lift cranes and site management to remove towers, nacelles, hubs, and blades while preserving component integrity.

Yes. We coordinate road, sea, and multimodal transport for oversized and heavy-load components, including customs coordination for international projects.

We stock Enercon E48, E70, E82, and Vestas V47, V52, and V80 models. Current inventory is listed on our Used Wind Turbines for Sale page.

Yes. We offer a 3-year standard warranty and optional 5-year extended warranty on refurbished components.

Yes. We provide full O&M packages with a 95% availability guarantee, backed by our partnership with RFM Services based in South Wales.

We supply full documentation, including original manufacturer specifications, maintenance histories, test reports, schematics, and engineering data.

Timelines vary, but typical projects range from 6–18 months depending on scale, planning approval, and grid connection availability.

We provide advisory support and work with UK-based partners to assist with planning applications and grid connection requirements.
